For most Airmen, the Basic Military Training experience is something their parents can only understand through second-hand accounts.

For Airman 1st Class Tyler Scott and his stepmother Airman 1st Class Kelly Scott, the BMT experience is something they will share and treasure together having graduated only eight weeks apart and being led by the same Military Training Instructors.

“It’s very cool and unique,” said Kelly Scott,  a newly graduated Airman from the 323rd Training Squadron. “It’s something we’ll get to share forever; the experiences, the little sayings that everyone has especially.”

Even though Kelly Scott enjoys having the shared experiences, she also likes knowing what skills her son learned while at the 323rd TRS.

“I like knowing what he’s capable of now,” said Kelly Scott. “I definitely like knowing he’s going to be super organized.”

The MTI who instructed both Scotts had a few words to say about what kind of trainees they were while going through BMT.

“The first trainee Scott did a lot to make the flight successful,” said Master Sgt. Edward Foddrill, an MTI assigned to the 323rd TRS. “He was just a solid overall trainee and now Airman.”

Foddrill added Kelly Scott was also integral to her flights success.

“She’s been an all-around solid trainee,” said Foddrill. “She’s kind of been the mother to the flight. She’s a little more experienced so she’s helped a lot of trainees in the flight get through and make it to graduation.”

Tyler Scott getting to attend his stepmother’s graduation was another rare part of the Scott’s BMT experience.

“It was really cool to see my mom graduate,” said Tyler Scott, a newly graduated Material Management Airman. “It all kind of worked out that I was in technical training at Lackland and got to attend.”

Tyler Scott imparted the experience gives him that much more respect for his stepmother.

“I’ve always had respect for her,” said Tyler Scott. “This just gives me a little bit more respect for her, knowing what kind of stuff she went through to get this point.”
