Col. Megan Schafer is the Vice Commander, 37th Training Wing, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, the largest training wing in the U.S. Air Force, comprised of more than 24,000 students and permanent party Airmen. She assists the wing commander in leading the wing known as the "Gateway to the Air Force," consisting of three groups and one inter-American academy, that trains and educates approximately 44,000 joint and international students annually, to include all Department of Defense Military Working Dogs.
Colonel Schafer received her commission from Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Detachment 650 at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, as a distinguished graduate in 2001. Prior to assuming her current assignment, she served as the director of Public Affairs for Pacific Air Forces at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. She has held a variety of positions at the wing, Field Operating Agency and Air Staff level, as well as in Joint and Coalition environments. While in Iraq, she support numerous combat missions, providing communication lines of effort that enhanced coalition operations and undermined enemy efforts. In her most recent time on the Air Staff, Colonel Schafer served as the Strategic Communication Advisor for the Secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force Chief of Staff.
