Hanukkah, which is celebrated this year from sundown Dec. 24 to sundown Jan. 1, is known as the Festival of Lights. Following Hanukkah tradition, one candle is lit each night throughout eight days to honor the miracle of the Hanukkah lights. Hanukkah, which is celebrated this year from sundown Dec. 24 to sundown Jan. 1, is known as the Festival of Lights. It is a time when Jews around the world celebrate the miracle of the Maccabees, the leaders of the Jewish rebel army, defeating the Syrian-Greek Empire and finding only enough pure oil to burn for one day in the holy temple.
