The Lackland Gateway Archives increased in size by more than 70% when the former Kelly Air Force Base ceased operations in 2001 and the entirety of the Kelly History Office was incorporated into the Lackland History office. The Kelly collection consists of of approximately 300K documents and photographs.

Kelly Field began operations a few days before the United States entered WWI. From that time on, it has expanded to meet a varying number of missions that defined not only the installation, but generations of families in San Antonio.
