JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas -- Joint Base San Antonio members whose new year’s resolutions are to lose weight and get into shape could earn points and prizes just by going to the gym and exercising.

Incentives are being offered to active-duty members, military dependents, retirees and Department of Defense civilians to encourage them to come out and utilize the amenities and equipment and take part in exercise classes and programs at all JBSA fitness centers to help them fulfill their new year’s resolutions.

A weight loss and health promotion contest – “Move It to Lose It Challenge: A New Year, New You” - will kick off in January and run through March at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston. The contest is being sponsored by the Department of Nutritional Medicine at the Capt. Jennifer M. Moreno Clinic.

Sign up and weigh-ins for the competition will be at the Outpatient Nutrition Services clinic at the Capt. Jennifer M. Moreno Clinic.

Competitors who sign up for the contest will be given a worksheet with a list of healthy activities and programs to participate in, said 1st Lt. Michael Stablein, Outpatient and Community Nutrition Services registered dietician at the Capt. Jennifer M. Moreno Clinic.

“The purpose (of the contest) is to help promote a healthier lifestyle for Department of Defense beneficiaries, our patients as well as our staff members,” Stablein said. “We want to showcase the healthy lifestyle programs offered here at JBSA.”

Participants in the weight loss competition will gain points by earning a stamp for each activity they do, which include wellness services and screenings at the Army Wellness Center, fitness classes and 5K runs.
Awards will be given to the winner who loses the biggest percentage of weight and the person with the most points earned at the end of the contest.

For more information on the contest, contact Stablein at 808-2232.
Customers at the JBSA-Lackland fitness centers can sign up for an incentive program in which they can earn points for how many workout sessions they do. By earning points, JBSA-Lackland members will be eligible to win gear including a Warhawk Fitness Center towel, water bottles, T-shirts or gym bags.

The Rambler Fitness Center will start its “New Year, New You” program in January. Participants in the program will earn points by running or walking 70 miles, biking 36 miles and participate in 24 group aerobic classes. Program participants will have a year to complete it. T-shirts are awarded for certain level of points achieved.

Chris Wasylchak, 502nd FSS equipment technician at the Rambler Fitness Center, said signing up for the incentive program can lead JBSA members on their way to achieving their fitness goals.

“We do encourage people to come in and start a tracking log,” he said. “Really set realistic goals for themselves and use the incentive programs and the facility we have here to accomplish those goals.”
