Eligible cadets from the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) interested in applying for the Language Enabled Airman Program (LEAP) may submit applications online from 1 January to 15 March 2020.

LEAP is designed and managed by the Air Force Culture and Language Center (AFCLC) to develop language enabled, cross-cultural Airmen with working-level foreign language proficiency. Participation in LEAP is voluntary, and Airmen must demonstrate ability in a foreign language specified on the Air Force Strategic Language List (SLL), receive endorsement from their unit commander, and compete via a board process. Selection to LEAP is based on applicants’ existing language proficiency, potential to achieve higher levels of language proficiency, and Air Force language requirements.

HOW TO APPLY

USAFA Applicants: Submit applications through the LEAP site, LEADeR, at https://cmsweb.maxwell.af.mil/Leap. You must be on an Air Force computer and have an Air University (AU) Portal account to begin your online LEAP application. Applicants that need to create or update their AU Portal account will be redirected to the AU Portal to access the site.

AFROTC Applicants: Contact your Detachment Commander for an application and to request an endorsement. AFROTC applicants must send completed application packages in readable PDF format through an encrypted email via Detachment Commanders to AFCLC.Language@us.af.mil.

YOUR APPLICATION

Applicants who meet all of the above eligibility requirements may submit an application to the AFCLC.

Completeness of the application package is part of the evaluation. All application forms should be submitted as a PDF, legible and correctly aligned. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure forms are complete and correctly aligned. All forms that are illegible or not correctly aligned will not be submitted to the Selection Board, and the applicant will be considered “ineligible” for consideration. Furthermore, applications and endorsements submitted outside the established window will not be considered.

The following documents are needed for a complete application package:

A.    Application form.

B.    All college transcripts. Unofficial post-secondary copies are acceptable.

C.    Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) and Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) score reports. All cadets must include current scores, which must remain current through 16 April 2020.

D.    Certificates from foreign language schools are optional.

      E.     Endorsement from applicant’s Commander. NOTE: an endorsement from applicant’s Commander/Director is mandatory and should be submitted directly through the online application site before the closing of the application window. AFROTC Detachment Commanders and other commanders without access to LEADeR should contact the AFCLC for alternate means of submitting the endorsement at AFCLC.Language@us.af.mil.
