The Military Working Dog (MWD) Trainer/Kennel Master Course is a three week course for future joint service MWD Trainers and Kennel Masters at the 341st Training Squadron.  Students spend 120 hours on training fundamentals to include:  basic obedience, substance detection, and K9 suspect apprehension.  Each student is paired with an MWD with multiple training deficiencies.

Not only does this challenge each student to reach into their “toolbox” of training methods but also gives the opportunity to learn new training methods from fellow students and instructors.

Additionally, the course places an emphasis on foundational MWD training, specifically the methods used at the 341st Training Squadron.  Students will learn and apply how MWD’s are initially trained in basic obedience, substance detection, and patrol work, thus arming them with vital knowledge to bring back to their respective kennels across the Department of Defense (DoD).  This leads to a smooth transition for a newly assigned MWD they will receive from the 341st TRS into an operational environment.

The MWD Trainer/Kennel Master’s Course has proven to serve as the bridge between the 341st TRS’s MWD Course and all MWD Kennels across the DoD.  It’s “back to the basics” mentality, hands-on approach, and student driven curriculum has impacted the DoD MWD community tremendously.  Feedback reveals that graduated students are sharing knowledge learned from the course with their peers upon return.

The MWD Trainer/Kennel Master’s Course leads the way in building solid, versatile, and mission ready MWD Trainers and Kennel Masters to maintain one of the DoD’s most requested force multipliers, the Military Working Dog.
