JBSA offers chapel services for holiday season

Joint Base San Antonio chapels have announced the following holiday services for 2016: 

Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston

All services will be held at the Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Main Post Chapel, 1605 Wilson Way, or the Dodd Field Chapel, 5584 Dodd Blvd., building 1721.

Catholic services:

• Christmas Eve mass; 5 p.m. at the Dodd Field Chapel.

• Christmas Eve midnight mass; 10 p.m. at the Main Post Chapel.

• Christmas day mass; 9:30 a.m. at the Main Post Chapel and 12:30 p.m. at the Dodd Field Chapel.

• New Year’s Eve mass; 5:30 p.m. at the Main Post Chapel.

 New Year’s Day mass; 9:30 a.m. at the Main Post Chapel.

Jewish service:

• Celebration of Hanukkah; Dec. 30, 8 p.m. at the Main Post Chapel.

Protestant services:

• Christmas Eve; 6 p.m. at the Main Post Chapel. The service will include a candlelight portion.

• Christmas day; 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the Main Post Chapel.

• Christmas day gospel; 10:30 a.m. at the Dodd Field Chapel.

• New Year’s Eve Watch Night; 7-9 p.m. at the Dodd Field Chapel. 

Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland

All services for permanent party service members and their families will be held at the Freedom Chapel, 2200 Truemper St., or the Airmen Memorial Chapel, building 5432, on Barnes Avenue.

Catholic services:

• Christmas Eve children’s play; 4 p.m. The play will involve a reenactment of the biblical birth of Jesus, said Anna Padilla, Catholic Freedom Chapel religious activities coordinator.

• Christmas Eve vigil mass; 5 p.m.

• Christmas Eve midnight mass; 12 a.m.

 Christmas day mass; 11 a.m.

Jewish service:

• Celebration of Hanukah; Dec. 25, 6:15-7:15 p.m. at the Airmen Memorial Chapel. The service will include a menorah lighting.

Protestant services:

 Christmas Eve; 7 p.m. The service will include a candlelight portion.

• Christmas day; 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. • New Year’s Eve Gospel Watch Night; 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The fellowship event is focused on worship and will include a short sermon. A free breakfast will follow the 12:30 p.m. service.

Bonnie Gonzalez, Freedom Chapel Protestant religious activities coordinator, said the holiday services provide an opportunity for everyone, including those who only attend church a few times a year, the opportunity to reconnect and come together with the family of Christ.

Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph

All services will be held at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel, 2 Circle Dr., or the Religious Activities Center, at the intersection of H and 1st St. West, building 975.

“The reason people ought to come to worship service is it’s about Christ, it’s not about us,” said Capt. Richard Boyd, 502nd Air Base Wing chaplain. “Christmas is about worshiping God, and we need to put Him first.”

• Christmas Eve caroling; 9:30 p.m. at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel.

• Christmas Eve midnight mass; 10 p.m. at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel.

• Christmas day mass; 8:30 a.m. at the RAC. The regular 11:30 a.m. mass is canceled for Christmas day.

• New Year’s Eve mass; 5 p.m. at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel.

• New Year’s Day mass; 8:30 a.m. at the RAC. The regular 11:30 a.m. mass is canceled for Christmas day.

Protestant services:

• Christmas Eve; 7 p.m. at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel. The service will include a candlelight portion.

• Christmas day; 9:30 a.m. at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel. The regular 8:15 and 11 a.m. services are canceled.

• New Year’s Day; 9:30 a.m. at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel. The regular 8:15 and 11 a.m. services are canceled.

Ecumenical chapel activities:

• Christmas decoration takedown, Jan. 8; 12:30 p.m. at the JBSA-Randolph Chapel and the RAC.
