Mother of fallen Defender ‘marches on’ honoring son

A memorial to 1st Lt. Joseph D. Helton Jr. who served as a security forces officer assigned to the 6th Security Forces Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., stands outside the Defender Inn Dining Facility on Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, Texas. Airmen leave Mountain Dew sodas around the memorial, since it was Helton’s favorite drink. Helton was killed by an explosively formed projectile that hit his vehicle Sept. 8, 2009, on a deployment to Baghdad, Iraq, supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. (Courtesy Photo)
